Simple Tangy Tofu Slices

I know I know I know. Tofu can be one of the most intimidating of the plant-based options. But, that’s where I come in!

I made this simple and easy tofu recipe for those of us who need a little introduction into this delicious & nutrient dense protein option. I hope you enjoy!

Duration: 35 Minutes

Yields: 3-4 Servings

//Ingredients//

1 Tbsp. Brown Sugar

1 Block of Super Firm Tofu (I like the Trader Joe’s brand)

1 Tbsp. Water

1/2 Tbsp. Tamari

1 Tbsp. Soy Sauce

Juice of 1/2 of an Orange

1/2 Tbsp. Sriracha

1 Tsp. Corn Starch

//Method//

1) Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. First and foremost, your going to want to dry your tofu as much as possible. This will make it more firm and crisp after baking. So unwrap the block, place a towel or paper towels on a plate with the block on top. Then add another towel on top of the block and place another plate on top of the whole thing. Let it sit for up to an hour. Your basically making a tofu sandwich with the towels and plates.

2) Now, for the sauce! In a microwave safe bowl, add in the brown sugar and water. Microwave for about 30 seconds until the sugar is melted. Add in the tamari, soy, orange juice, sriracha, and cornstarch. Use a whisk and mix well.

3) Microwave for 15 seconds, take out and stir, then put it back in for another 15 seconds. This should incorporate everything and as it cools, it should thicken a bit.

4) Time for tofu slicing—As pictured above, slice your block in thin rectangles. You should have about 8-10 thin slices.

5) Lay out the slices on a lined baking sheet and then brush them with the sauce. Flip them over and brush the other side with the sauce as well.

6) Place in the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Take them out, flip them over, and put them back in for another 10.

7) Use as a deli meat for a sandwich, or pair them with your favorite noodles! They store great in the fridge in a sealed container. When you’re ready, just put them in the microwave for a few seconds and enjoy!
